Max Pollak
"If hearing a dancer tap can double your fun,
hearing hoofer Max Pollak can be positively
psychedelic. Not content to leave sound-making
to busy heels and toes, he sings electrifying
Santeria chants; his body percussion turns
flesh and bones into drums resonant with
Afro-Cuban rhythms. He has inspired
delirium all over the globe."

Proudly presents a
Weekend Workshop with RumbaTap Creator
Max Pollak
April 24, 25, 26, 2009

Austrian-born musician/dancer/composer Max Pollak is a 2008 fellow in Choreography from the New York Foundation of the Arts. He moved to New York in 1991, graduated from The New School's jazz music program, and pursued interests in tap, world music and body percussion. From New York City's vibrant Latino music community, Max soon incorporated elements of Afro-Cuban jazz and folkloric music in his performances, and began to develop what he calls "RumbaTap", mixing body percussion with tap dance and vocal harmony. Mr. Pollak soon distinguished himself on the international tap scene as an innovative soloist and educator. Today he is recognized worldwide as the creator of RumbaTap.

His tap credits include performances with tap legends Buster Brown, Jimmy Slyde and Gregory Hines, Manhattan Tap, Urban Tap, and Roxane Butterfly's Worldbeats. Mr. Pollak has published numerous articles on tap history and technique in Dance Magazine and is currently traveling the world with his own group, RumbaTap, and frequent collaborator Paul Carlon. He has held residencies at Philipos Nakas Conservatory (Athens), Leipzig University, University of Havana, Stephens College (MO), and UM Duluth among others. His appearances on film include the documentaries Latido Latino, made for Spanish public television, and Cómo se forma una rumba/How to Create a Rumba, by Iván Acosta (shown at Lincoln Center as part of Latin Beat Film Festival 2001!)

A limited supply of commemorative T-shirts will be available at the workshop.
